Team Bio

Famous for its worlds of art, architecture, fashion, opera, and cuisine, Italy has a long tradition with many different sports, including with Rugby League, which was established in the country prior to the 1950s. However, the popularity of Rugby League within the nation has always been behind a shadow of Football, Basketball, and Cycling to name a few which predominately take the interest amongst the people of Italy.

The first official match of the Italian Rugby League national team took place in Cahors, France in 1951, whereby the Azzurri’s lost 29–17 to the host nation of France. Since then, of the 63 international games Italy Rugby League have played to date, they have won just over half.

There is a very diverse Italian squad preparing for the RLWC2021. The players come from north and south, from city and country, and can trace native-born and heritage players amongst their ranks. A mix of Australian-born NRL stars, homegrown talent and union converts will hope to assist the development of the game of Rugby League in Italy as they come to partake in their third consecutive Rugby League World Cup.
