Team Bio

Located in the epicentre of the South Pacific, the nation of Fiji is made up of more than 332 islands (only 110 are inhabited), and has a population of just over 900,000. These islands are all consistent for their beautiful combinations of volcanic mountain ranges, rainforests, and sandy beaches.

Fiji have been participating as a men’s rugby league team since 1992. The 'Fiji Bati’ are the most successful Pacific based nation, having reached the semi-finals of the Rugby League World Cup on three different occasions. Fiji has produced some of the finest rugby league players in the world. Notable examples include Lote Tuqiri and Petero Civoniceva, who have both played in the State of Origin series. A host of modern Fijian players now litter the upper echelons of the domestic competitions, the NRL in Australia as well as the Super League here in England.

Rugby League is in a period of sustained growth within Fiji. The current domestic competition consists of 12 teams, split between the islands. The national team had a fantastic tournament last time out, topping their group in the last Rugby League World Cup in 2017, as well as beating the top-ranked IRL team, New Zealand in the quarter-finals, before losing out to eventual winners Australia in the semi-final. The ‘Fiji Bati’ are going to be an exciting team to watch at the RLWC2021, you won’t want to miss their opening game in Hull, a repeat of the 2017 semi-final vs Australia.
