Team Bio

The Australian national rugby league team were first established when the creation of the 'Northern Union game' was first played in Australia in 1908, and the Kangaroos played their first international match in the same year in Sydney, in which they narrowly lost 11-10 to New Zealand. Since then, the majority of the Kangaroos' games in the first half of the 20th century, came from alternating tours to Great Britain and New Zealand.

Rugby league in Australia has grown to be one of the nations most participated and watched sports in the country. The Australian domestic Rugby League, (NRL) is regarded as one of the highest level domestic leagues in the world, featuring the best players from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. The State of Origin inter-state series is also hosted annually on the NRL calendar. Watched by millions across the country, the fixture showcases the states of New South Wales and Queensland in what is now known as Australian sport’s greatest rivalry.

Australia is the fourth oldest national side after England, New Zealand and Wales. But that has not stopped them being the most successful team to date in Rugby League World Cup history, having contested all 15 and won 11 of them, failing to reach the final only once, in the inaugural tournament in 1954. With a RLWC2021 group comprising of Italy, Scotland, and opening game opponents Fiji, the Kangaroos will be seeking a record 16th Rugby League World Cup title win. All eyes will be on the current back-to-back holders of the tournament at RLWC2021.
