Team Bio

Rugby League is a sport that is played in several regions of Spain. However, the game gained significant popularity in the autonomous community of Catalonia following the success of the Perpignan-based Catalans Dragons in the Super League since 2006. Of the back of this, a governing body for rugby league in Catalonia was formed in 2008 and was originally given an official observer status by the European Rugby League Federation, before later being expelled a few years later. Meanwhile, five years later in 2013, the Spanish Rugby League Association was formed and admitted to the Rugby League European Federation. New Rugby League clubs have subsequently been formed in the Valencian Community, Madrid and Andalucia, on top of in Catalunya. Half of the current Spain Wheelchair squad playing their club rugby league with the Catalans Dragons Wheelchair side.

This will be Spain’s second World Cup after competing in the 2017 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup, where they narrowly lost to Australia in the quarter-finals. Spain will therefore be out for revenge after being drawn in the same group with the Wheelaroos, alongside hosts of the tournament England, and debutants in the Wheelchair World Cup, Norway, who they will face at the opening game of the group at the Copper Box Areana in London.
