Team Bio

Rugby League is recognised as the national sport of the country, and from this it has led to a significant rise in the popularity of the women's game in the nation. The Women’s Cook Islands Rugby League team played there first full international match at the 2003 Women's Rugby League World Cup. They managed to win two of the six games they played at that tournament.

Going on to represent the country at the 2017 Rugby League World Cup was an outstanding achievement for the Cook Islands Women’s team, especially with their Pacific Islands counterparts in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa not having a lack of world-class players to compete in the tournament. The team played three games at the 2017 World Cup, winning one against England 22-16, causing an upset over the 2021 hosts who would eventually reach the 2017 semi-final.

There are a number of players within the New Zealand Women Rugby League setup who could potentially represent the small island nation that have Cook Islands heritage in the RLWC2021. The majority of the current squad predominately play in New Zealand for domestic based rugby league clubs, given of the fact of Cook Islands being a self-governing island state, in free association with New Zealand.
