Team Bio

The sport of Rugby League was born in England with the foundation of the Northern Union in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, August 1895 – and the national governing body has been known as the Rugby Football League (RFL) since 1922. 

The England Rugby League team itself dates all the way back to 1904, when they played against a mixture of Welsh and Scottish players in Wigan. Until the 1950s, they regularly toured Australia and New Zealand and played both home and away matches against neighbours Wales and France, but when it was decided that Great Britain would tour the Southern Hemisphere instead of England, France and Wales became the only regular opponents.

England have competed six times in the World Cup but have failed to win the competition. In every other year of World Cup history, it has been a Great Britain team that has represented the nation, instead of an England team.

England have hosted matches in eight different tournaments including three that took part internationally. England have played 34 games in the World Cup; winning 20, drawing two and losing 12. As hosts of the 2021 Rugby League World Cup and being beaten finalists in 2017, England automatically qualified for the tournament and will be looking to get off to a great start in front of a packed home crowd at St James Park on 15th October 2022 against Samoa.
