Team Bio

Cook Islands is a self-governing island state, in free association with New Zealand, located in the South Pacific Ocean. With a mere population of just nearly 17,000, Cook Islands is the smallest nation out of the 21 competing at the RLWC2021.

The Cook Islands has officially been an international men’s rugby league team since 1989, with the sport being recognised as the most popular and the national sport of the nation. The sizeable number of Cook Islanders (and ones with strong heritage) living and playing in New Zealand has ensured that they have never been short of players with world-class rugby league experience. Despite being the lowest ranked nation competing in the Men’s RLWC2021, we’re sure the team will provide exciting viewing.

Of the six World Cup games, the Men’s Cook Islands team have competed in - the 2000 and 2013 tournaments, they have managed to win one game; against Wales in 2013. They will be competing against Wales once again in the RLWC2021 group stage, however, their other opponents in the group comprise of nations they have struggled against. Papua New Guinea, who they have failed to beat on five occasions, and Tonga in which they have beaten just the once in 10 meetings.
