Team Bio

Comprising of a population around 107,000, Tonga is a nation boasted with some 170 islands located of the South Pacific Ocean. Although only 36 of the islands are inhabited.

Rugby league first gained attention in Tonga when the Pacific Cup was partially held in the country during 1986, as well as the nation playing their first international match in the same year, beating Western Samoa 34-16. Rugby League has now gone on to become a popular team sport played in Tonga, and has one of the most competitive standard of rugby league competitions in the Pacific islands, which has had its hand in helping to produce some high standard players.

More recently in 2019, Tonga stunned the world number one nation Australia, winning 16–12, making it one of the greatest upsets in International Rugby League history. Off the back of the success of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup that Tonga had, and with the revolution of more players choosing to represent their Tongan heritage ahead of their birthplaces such as New Zealand or Australia, Tonga is a big challenger in going one step further this time round at the RLWC2021 in reaching the final, and possibly even going on to win the tournament.
