Team Bio

Domestic rugby league was first played in Ireland in 1989 following a meeting at Dublin Airport. The Dublin Blues were the first club to be formed in Ireland and played invitational teams from the UK for the first number of years. Ireland began competing in international rugby league in 1995 and made their debuts when they travelled to Washington DC to take on the USA, which they went on to win 24-22.

The Irish rugby league team is one of many Irish sports teams that draws its players from across the island of Ireland, with the flag being used to represent the team at RLWC2021, being the Four Provinces Flag of Ireland.

Since then, Ireland Rugby League has participated in: the 1995 Rugby League Emerging Nations Tournament, the 1996 Super League World Nines, and four Rugby League World Cups – 2000, 2008. 2013, and 2017. Having played a total of 70 international matches ever, Ireland have won just over half (36).

Ireland started their Rugby League World Cup 2021 qualification campaign in the 2018 European Championship, where they finished third with a win against Scotland and two losses against France and Wales. They went on the following year to beat Spain and Italy in the 2019 European play-off tournament, ensuring Ireland’s qualification for the tournament, where they will face newcomers Jamaica, the ever-prospering Lebanon, and current World Number 1 ranked team in New Zealand.
