Team Bio

Lebanon is an Arabic speaking country in the Middle-East, located in Western Asia. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south, and is located to approximately six million people.

The formation of rugby league in Lebanon lies in Australia. A team consisting of Lebanese Australians represented Lebanon at the 1997 Rugby League World Sevens, with the following year Lebanon Rugby League playing their first full international, where they defeated Japan 52–28. A group of Australian-born rugby league players with Lebanese heritage, mostly from inner-city Sydney formed a team with a view to entering the 2000 Rugby League World Cup. They subsequently went on to win the qualifying competition, earning their place by defeating Italy and Morocco of the Mediterranean group before travelling to Florida to defeat the USA, winners of the Pacific group. In 2002 a domestic league was set up in Lebanon, initially with four university-based teams. Players from the domestic competition now feature in the national team, alongside Lebanon heritage based players in the NRL.

Most of Lebanon's games have been played as friendlies or as part of the Mediterranean Cup which has taken place sporadically from 1999, with Lebanon winning all 5 tournaments that have been held. The team won their first ever World Cup game against France in the qualifying group stage of RLWC2017, which resulted in the team competing in the quarter finals. The Cedars lost the quarter finals to Tonga 24- 22. The team also received many plaudits in that tournament for their performances against Australia and England in particular.

Lebanon’s Rugby League World Cup history has been defined by close losses and unfavourable draws. As well as actual World Cup matches, Lebanon's two unsuccessful qualifying attempts for the 2008 and 2013 World Cup’s were both decided by points difference after drawing with Ireland in 2006 and again in 2007, and Italy in 2011. However, Lebanon automatically qualified for the RLWC2021 having reached the quarter finals of the previous Rugby League World Cup in 2017.
