Hemel Stags open new training facility with support of £90,000 Rugby League World Cup CreatedBy grant

Hemel Stags will officially open their new training facility on Saturday 23 July which has been refurbished with the support of a £90,000 grant from Rugby League World Cup 2021’s trailblazing CreatedBy programme.

The grant has enabled the club, based in Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire, to transform their training facilities, allowing them to refurbish and upgrade their changing facilities, convert what was previously the physio’s room into a new gym and build two new changing rooms.

The Rugby League World Cup 2021 has invested over £25 million in its Social Impact programme, and the CreatedBy grant funding has been a key part of that, with 59% of the investment going into the top 30% of the most deprived communities in the country.

The CreatedBy programme, funded by DCMS, Sport England and the National Lottery is dedicated to improving the environments where rugby league takes place, giving people more and better opportunities to engage with the game and get active.

Applications for CreatedBy grants have been open since October 2018, and working alongside the Rugby Football League, funding has been awarded for large scale projects, such as clubhouse and changing room renovations, to smaller grants for new equipment such as lawnmowers and floodlights.

Rugby League World Cup 2021 Chief Executive, Jon Dutton, said:

Our trailblazing social impact programme has and will continue to make a positive difference to people’s lives, creating new opportunities for people to get involved in rugby league whether it be as a player, coach or volunteer.
Hemel Stags are a fantastic club with a rich history and they are a central pillar of the local community. We were delighted to be able to support this project through CreatedBy and help them with this project which will stand them in great stead for years to come.

I
’m sure their opening on Saturday will be the first of many fantastic rugby league occasions and that their new facilities will be enjoyed by players, coaches and volunteers for years to come.”

The new facilities will get their first taste of rugby league action on Saturday with the London Junior League Finals Day taking place at the venue. Eight clubs will be involved across five finals in what should be a fantastic day of rugby league.

Hemel Stags Chair, Bob Brown, said:

Everyone at Hemel Stags is incredibly excited to see the Rugby League World Cup 2021 coming to England later this year and we can’t wait to see what England can achieve in all three tournaments.
Hosting tournaments such as this one provides real inspiration for people to get involved in the game and its absolutely vital that the opportunities are available should they want to get involved whether that be as a player, coach, volunteer or supporter.
The funding from RLWC2021’s CreatedBy programme has been truly transformational for our club, and we will see the benefit for future generations.

Stephen Guan, Southern Regions Development Manager for the Rugby Football League, said:

Rugby League has strong northern roots however the sport has established and developing areas across the South of the country. We have seen growth in popularity across the country since the tournament was last held in England in 2013 and this will again continue as excitement builds for this year’s competition.

Hemel is a brilliant club and were very worthy recipients of a CreatedBy grannt. Their application really stood out and demonstrated
just what a difference the funding would make both in the short and long-term and and I’m delighted to see this project come to fruition.”
