RLWC2021 Host Process Commences

Thoughts from Jon Dutton, RLWC2021 CEO

On the eve of the men’s and women’s World Cup Finals my own thoughts turn to the task ahead in delivering a truly outstanding tournament in 2021.

In the New Year RLWC2021 will kick off the Host town and city bid process.

The start of this competition comes on the back of several successful partner events held in July with over 250 attendees hearing about the high-level vision for the tournament including staging the men's, women's and wheelchair World Cup's together for the first time.

This was followed by gathering aspirant hosts together at the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford in October to give people a flavour of a world class Rugby League experience.

Next month RLWC2021 are hosting three workshops in Manchester, Leeds and London which will trigger the race for towns and cities to put their best foot forward and develop a bid.

The workshop attendees will come from local authorities, clubs, stadia, the community and associated hotel, training and local partners.

The delegates will hear about the journey ahead for the tournament along with the detail of what bidders will need to demonstrate as part of the Host process.

Most importantly the towns and cities will also hear about the benefits that being involved in RLWC2021 could bring particularly around civic pride and the extensive legacy programme that will be delivered. An expanded event footprint will attract more live spectators, encourage domestic tourism and longer overseas visitor stays. Every one of the 67 matches across the three tournaments will be broadcast live to the world with all 31 games in the men’s competition being broadcast live on the BBC.

RLWC2021 are looking for dynamic partners that want to host men’s, women’s and wheelchair games along with those that wish to host team base camps and training venues.

Host bids will close at the end of July following which there will be a rigorous review and section process ahead of successful Hosts being announced in early 2019.

RLWC2021 are delighted and proud to have partnered with the Cabinet Office as part of our commitment to the Northern Powerhouse. Whilst the tournament will be hosted across England we do intend to stage a large number of games in the North supporting the governments vision and £25M investment into the tournament and its legacy.

RLWC2021 have received 39 expressions of interest from towns and cities and are both confident and excited that this cohort will provide great opportunities for the tournament to meet its objectives of being the most attended and viewed World Cup ever along with being the most digitally connected entertainment event of 2021.
