Lord Jonathan Caine - Non-Executive Director


Jonathan Caine was born in Leeds in 1966 and was educated at Temple Moor School. After graduating from the University of Leicester in 1987 with a BA (Hons) in History he joined the Conservative Research Department, taking over the Northern Ireland desk in 1988. 

Jonathan served as Special Adviser to the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland from 1991-5. Following a spell with The Communication Group Jonathan returned to the Conservative Research Department in 1998 becoming Assistant Director and advising four successive leaders of the Opposition and three shadow Northern Ireland Secretaries. 

In 2007 Jonathan joined Bell Pottinger Public Affairs as a Director providing counsel to a number of high profile clients. In late 2009 at David Cameron’s request Jonathan became Chief of Staff to the Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary in the run up to the 2010 election. Following that election, from 2010-19 Jonathan was special adviser to four successive Northern Ireland Secretaries while also advising both David Cameron and Theresa May on all aspects of Northern Ireland policy. 

He helped draft David Cameron’s landmark statement on Bloody Sunday in 2010 and was heavily involved in negotiating the Stormont House and Fresh Start Agreements in 2014 and 2015. Jonathan was nominated for a peerage in 2016 by David Cameron following the latter’s resignation as Prime Minister and took his seat in the House of Lords in October that year. 

He is now a Deputy Speaker of the House. Outside of politics Jonathan is a lifelong rugby league supporter having attended his first Leeds game at Headingley in 1971. In 2020 he chaired the joint Super League Europe/Rugby Football League Panel to determine which team should take up the twelfth place in Super League 2021. 

He is a Vice Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group and Patron of the Danny Jones Defibrillator Fund. Jonathan also enjoys listening to classic rock music and a decent pint.
